The old civic north gate is located near the Porta Sole quarter of the city. Huge stones of the lower level are Etruscan and above them rises the perfectly preserved 3rd Century Roman Arco di Augusto. The city’s new name was inscribed with typical imperial modesty ‘AUGUSTUS’ in very large letters and ‘Perusia’ in tiny ones by Octavius Caesar (later Emperor Augustus). The wonderful portico above the Roman bastion was added in the 16th Century and makes this gate one of the most beautiful in Italy.
