The Aedes Muratoriana or Santa Maria della Pomposa is probably Modena’s most ancient religious edifice, and was mentioned as early as 1135. The church was once a part of the renowned Pomposa Abbey in the Ferrara territory, but there are few of its early features left. The original base of the huge decorated tower is still intact. The temple was remodelled in the early 1700s by Muratori. The interior has Muratori’s monumental tomb by Lodovico Pogliaghi in 1931 and has a half-body sculpture.
