The Abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano was constructed on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple and is surrounded by great external walls. It rises among grey rocks and cliffs of over 200 meters high. Built in Romanesque style it is partially incorporated into a natural cave which is used as the apse. This contained a medieval icon of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus until 1966, when the icon was stolen. Outside is a fabulous fountain, which many consider as a font or a small temple erected to give pilgrims relief.
