The Abbazia di Santi Severo e Martirio is a huge medieval complex south of Orvieto. Part of it is now a hotel but it was originally built in 1221 to house a Benedictine Order, which had been founded by St Norbert in 1120. Visitors can still see much of the monastery including the 12-sided tower built in the 12th Century. The church has a marble inlaid floor as well as fresco fragments of medieval origin. There is also an Abbot’s House of the 13th Century and a monks’ refectory.
