The Villa Comunale is dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi; it is the only green area within the city and dates back to the 19th Century. Sited inside is a small circular temple that once belonged to the convent of the Marcelline nuns. It was Gaetano Stella the physician and botanist from Lecce who wanted to restructure this part of the city close to where the fourth door ‘Porta San Martino’ once stood. Also to be found here are statues of some of the people who came from Otranto.
