Set amid natural, rocky surroundings, Rocca Calascio has been used as a film location on several occasions. The fort was built in white limestone and can be found halfway between the Tirino valley and Navelli plain, its main strategic purpose being that of checking the important L’Aquila route which passed below its walls. It housed a small garrison and the hamlet below it was enclosed into its walls for protection from invading armies and coastal pirates.
