The doorway, Porta Napoli, is also known as the triumphal arch. It was built in 1548 from a design by architect Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, in honour of Carlo V. It stands some 20 metres high and on the gable can be seen the crest of Carlo V, symbol of the Hapsburgic power. The door is the greatest entrance in the town of Lecce even though nowadays it gives the impression of being isolated somewhat from the walls after it was renovated over fifty years ago.
