The popular Piazza Sant’Oronzo is situated in the centre of Lecce. Here there is an ancient column which bears a statue of the saint which marks the end of the Via Appia. To the west of this column is the Palazzo del Sedile, a loggia built in 1592, and adjoining it is the doorway of the church of San Marco (1543). On the south side of the square you can see the excavated remains of a Roman amphitheatre, dated from the 2nd Century AD.
