The original 13th Century seat of the Captain of Justice was rebuilt in 1573 as a residence for the daughter of Charles V, Margherita of Austria. What remains today is the tower. In 1310 it was around 52 metres tall but the bell, weighing almost seven tons, was a later addition. As well as marking the hours from dawn to dusk, the bell was used to signal the closing of the drawbridges of the walls an hour after vespers. Today, a clock linked to a bell can be heard each evening, observing the town’s foundation by slowly striking 99 times.
