A little way beyond Porta Napoli visitors to Lecce can find the Obelisk. This is a 10 metre high structure which was built in 1822 by the sculptor Vito Carluccio. The purpose was to celebrate the visit of Ferdinando I Bourbon. The Obelisk contains the crests of the land of Otranto, which at one time also included the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto. On the base of this high structure can be seen a dolphin biting a half moon.
