The Navelli plain was at one time a strategic outpost linking the L’Aquila area with the main European and Italian towns. There are still many stately houses and tower houses along its steep roads and the town is dominated by a large fortress. But Navelli is perhaps most famous for its production of the valuable spice saffron, and that which is cultivated here is considered to be the finest in the world. The crocus plants are still harvested by hand with the pistils dried slowly near ashes before being stored in dark glass jars.
