The huge Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga National Park was developed in 1991 and extends over 44 municipalities and three regions (Abruzzo, Lazio and Marche). It includes the Gran Sasso Massif - the highest mountain group of the entire Apennine area, with 3,000m at the Corno Grande, also the origin of the Calderone glacier, the most southern in Europe. There are several villages which have kept their mountain-village character including Castel del Monte and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, and places like Castelli, renowned for its pottery.
