The excursion to Campo Pericoli starts at the base camp of Campo Imperatore which is situated in the Gran Sasso National Park. The trip heads towards the Astronomical observatory and then on to the Lupo pass and the Portella pass, following the historic route first taken by the first Gran Sasso climbers. From Portella, the descent is down to the amphitheatre of Campo Pericoli and on reaching the Garibaldi refuge, there’s a climb towards Corno Grande in the direction of Sella di Monte Aquila and back to the starting point. This is a four-hour trek for walkers of some experience.
