The Church of Sant’Irene is dedicated to the patron saint of the city. It was erected between 1591 and 1639 by the Theatines also replacing the chapel in the Governor’s palace, now in a state of disrepair. The interior has some beautiful Baroque altars and a painting of the Transportation of the Holy Ark, a masterpiece by Oronzo Tiso that dates back to 1758. On the Roman Manneristic façade are crests of the city and the statue of Sant’Irene, by sculptor Mauro Manieri.
