The Castle, which can be located south east of the Piazza Sant’Oronzo, was commissioned by Carlo V of Hapsburg. He wanted it to be built using the ancient Norman city walls in the 12th Century. This castello was later restored during the Angevin period. The trapezium-shaped stronghold with its two concentric sections separated by a yard was erected between 1539 and 1549 and the wide ditches around the castle were filled in, in 1972.
