Archaeological site of Amiternum
San Vittorino L’Aquila - Italy

Map

The Archaeological site of Amiternum is the best known and oldest site in the region. Here are the remains of the theatre, build into the hillside with a cavea providing ideal acoustics. This theatre is 80 metres in diameter and could accommodate up to 2000 spectators. The 1st Century amphitheatre, able to seat 6000 spectators, is across the road, still preserved with its brick walling and 48 arches on two levels. Other structures include a possible public building and a series of buildings with fresco and mosaic decorations set around a wide arcaded courtyard.
