The Roman Amphitheatre of Lucera is from the 1st Century B.C. and one of the oldest in Southern Italy. It was built by the tribune Marcus Vecilius Campus to honour the colony of Lucera and Caesar August, the first to be dedicated to an Emperor. The amphitheatre is a considerable size and is evidence of the towns’ importance. The Spoliaria ruins with its gymnasiums, infirmaries for injured fighters and a small graveyard for the gladiators who had been killed can be found next to the amphitheatre.
