The Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare is located on one of Tremiti Islands, in fact the island of San Nicholas. The Benedictine order built the Abbey and over time has been changed from the original structure. In the 15th Century the Lateran Canonicals commissioned the current façade made from Istria stone. Again the current portal replaces the original and has representations of the Virgin Mary with Saints and Cherubs carved into the stone. The mosaic floor has an artistic value and has remained almost unchanged in the central part of the building: dating back the 11th Century.
