The Torre del Popolo was constructed in the early 12th Century and extended upwards at the end of the 16th Century. It is home to the historic bell that, from the late 16th Century, called to session the Greater and Lesser Councils and the Genovese orders of Government. It can be found in what used to be the Palazzo del Commune. Formerly a prison for political offenders, it was in a cell here in 1833 that Grimaldi, the patriot J. Ruffini, slit his wrists so as not to betray others affiliated with the Youth of Italy movement.
