The SS. Annunziata basilica is classed as a sanctuary because one of its chapels contains a painting of the Annunciation. According to tradition the picture appeared on the wall at the time of the Virgin Mary. The chapel was decorated in precious marble columns by the wishes of Piero di Cosimo, the father of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The portico at the entrance dates back to the 17th Century. Inside is the Chiostrino dei Voti which is frescoed by Masters of the Florentine school over two centuries: Andrea del Sarto, Franciabigio, Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino.
