The Sant’Ubaldo basilica, restored in 1500 by the Canonici Regolari Lateranensi, has an amazing five naves. There’s beautiful work here, including the marble altar and the windows depicting the Gubbio patron saint, whose ashes are kept in a crystal urn over the altar. Some fine carving includes that of the doors and there are frescoes on the cloister walls which show how beautiful they must have been when painted in the 16th Century. The city’s ceri are stored here – these candles are 13ft-tall wooden, octagonal towers topped by wax saints representing the 3 guilds of Gubbio – builders, artisans and farmers.
