The architects Brother Sisto and Brother Ristoro, who were part of the Dominican order, built the church of Santa Maria Novella in 1278. The work was continued by Brothers Jacopo Talenti and Giovanni da Campi and was constructed along Gothic lines. You can still find evidence of the Gothic style in part of the façade in the grave niches, with pointed arches clad in green and white marble created by Leon Battista Alberti in the 1470s at the request of Giovanni Rucellai.
