Santa Maria del Carmine is a 2nd Century church and is to be found in the Oltrarno. It was completely destroyed by a fire and was rebuilt in the 18th Century by the architects Ruggieri and then Mannaioni. The only part of the original church that remains is the Brancacci Chapel which was frescoed by Masolino and Masaccio at the start of the 15th Century and was completed in 1480 by Filippino Lippi. Of note are the fabulous scenes by Masaccio ‘The payment of Tribute’ and ‘Purge from Paradise’.
