The San Lorenzo has its origins dating back to 393 when Saint Ambrose consecrated it in memory of the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence. It is adorned with fantastic artwork, including the marble Altar of Sacrament carved by Desiderio da Settignano, while the basilica features major artists of the same period, including Donatello, Verrocchio, Filippo Lippi and Brunelleschi. It also encompasses the Biblioteca Laurenziana (Italy’s most important library) and the Cappelle Medicee. The Basilica is testimony to the political power and patronage of the Medici family. Admission is free.
