The church of San Giovanni, although a religious complex, was built by the Jerusalem knights in 1180. It was also used as a convent and hostel for the wayfarers coming to the city or those travelling to the Holy Land. The Romanesque architecture which has strong vaults and sober black stone walls also has a magnificent bell tower. Dating from the middle ages there is also the Commendam hospital attached to this lovely church that is now used for cultural events.
