The name of the ancient village of San Giovanni Profiamma has two origins. The first comes from the church which was built here between the 12th and the 13th Century and which has an attractive Romanesque style. The other derives from the old Forum Flaminii settlement which was founded here by Caius Flaminii around 220 BC. The village was once a Roman ‘municipium’ and later became the seat of the local bishop before coming under the authority of the nearby Fulginiae (Foligno). It is said to stand on the meeting point of the old and new Via Flaminia.
