The Roman Theatre in Gubbio was constructed during the 1st Century AD with square blocks of limestone from the local area. The tiers have a diameter of 70 meters and are divided by short steps in four parts. There is a colonnade of arches on pillars on the outer part, and the upper section with another colonnade, now missing, would have formed a portico going all around the arena. It would have accommodated 6,000 spectators. Today it is used as a summertime venue for performances of classical Greek and Roman drama, and Shakespeare.
