A castle has probably been here since the Roman period, or at least since the days of King Theodoric the Great. It is set high above the Garda Lake on a huge square rock some 294 meters high and is sometimes called ‘Queen’s’. It was at this place in the 10th Century that the story of Adelaide unfolded. She was the widow of Lothar, and Queen of Italy. Adelaide was held a prisoner in the castle and written about by the poet, Giosuč Carducci, who called it the ‘shadowy castle, telling the tale of ancient buried cities and barbarian queens’.
