The Porta San Bartolomeo is somewhat hidden from view by the Genoa-Casella railway. It was the gate into the city of Genoa that had a drawbridge with a spherical counterweight system to rise and lower it and is the same type of system that is preserved in a fort in Savona. Its name derives from the San Bartolomeo church, to which it led during the Pentecostal just after mass out through the door to the grassy embankment for a picnic gathering (the site is now the Genoa-Casella train station).
