The elegant Santa Trinita Bridge was originally built in 1567. It was constructed on the orders of Cosimo ten years after the previous bridge was damaged by flood waters. The wonders of this bridge lie in the shallow curves of the arches, which have experts puzzling how it stands up to the strain. The design has been attributed to Ammannati, though some claim his idea came from Michelangelo’s Medici tomb arc. Ponte Santa Trinita was destroyed in 1944 but rebuilt using mainly original material, including, like the 1567 bridge, stone quarried from the Boboli Gardens.
