The Piazza D’Azeglio was formed in the Mattonaia quarter of the city just inside the city walls at the end of the 19th Century. It formed part of the development plan devised by the architect Poggi in the 1870s. The Bourgeoisie thought the area both residential and desirable. The area saw the creation of the Prince Umberto theatre, which sadly was destroyed by fire two decades later. It is now one of the few green spaces in the city centre, with amusements for young children, such as a merry-go-round, slides and a wooden castle in a cordoned off area.
