The Palazzo con torre Maruffo is the oldest example of an aristocratic home and is flanked by a graceful tower dating from medieval times. There was a time when all noble families possessed a residence of this kind overlooking neighbouring streets and houses. After an decree from the town council most of these towers were taken down on safety reasons, apart from the Torre degli Embriaci of the Piccamiglio; others are surrounded by buildings or converted, like the tower near the Chiesa di S.Giorgio. The Maruffo tower stands in its original condition.
