The National Picture Gallery was created in 1836 and gave the first public exhibition of Ferrarese paintings. Its aim was to set up a museum to preserve and promote Ferrara’s art and culture. The gallery consisted mainly of medium and large works with religious themes and in 1958 it was given over to the national trust. The museum now holds more than 200 holy and profane works of art, giving the visitor an idea of Ferrarese paintings between the 13th and 17th centuries.
