Ferdinando II employed a Dane named Niels Stensen to integrate the Medici family’s collections into one mineral collection. It was the Lorena family who added to the collection; transforming into a grouping that could be studied, classified and compared. There are around 35,000 mineral samples on display in the museum. These are divided into five sections: ‘General collection’, the ‘Regional collection of Italy’, the ‘Meteorites collection’, the ‘ Lithological’ section and the ‘Carved Stones’. Their value is more historical and aesthetic than mineralogical.
