The Loggia dell’Ospedale San Matteo is also known as the Loggia di San Matteo and can be found on the corner of the Piazza San Marco, just before the turning off to the Via Ricasoli. The portico was part of the hospital dedicated to San Matteo and opened at the end of the 14th Century, and became the Accademia di Belle Arti in 1785. Legend has that the Loggias seven arches inspired Brunelleschi for his Loggia degli Innocenti. It was Della Robbia’s’ workshop who were responsible for the glazing of the terracotta windows in the three portals.
