About half way along the Via dei Consoli – the street which connects the San Martino quarter and Piazza Grande – the street widens to form Largo del Bargello. This is considered to be the centre of the ancient quarter of San Giuliano. In front of the 14th Century palazzo, stands the small Fontana dei Matti (fountain of the mad). The story goes that in order to be defined as mad (matto), people had to run around the fountain 3 times and bathe themselves in the water. The round, 16th Century fountain was once the main water source of Gubbio.
