The Lanterna in Genoa stands on a rocky outcrop and is the world famous emblem of the city. Constructed in 1543 on the spot where the original lighthouse stood, the Lanterna can be sited from over 30 miles out to sea. The square-shaped tower is 120 metres high and has an exhausting 375-step climb for anyone wanting to reach the top. For those that do make it, there’s a rewarding view over the whole bay. The local story goes that the architect was made to throw himself off the top to prevent him building another lighthouse for a rival city.
