The hermitage and sanctuary of Santa Maria Giacobbe can be found west of Pale, near Foligno. It was built about 1200 as a place to worship Maria Jacobi, believed to have been present when Jesus was crucified. Inside the church there are many frescoes, both votive and ornamental painting. The vault has been carved from the cliff-side and the earliest frescoes were painted straight onto the rock face behind the altar, around the 13th Century.
