Gallipoli Castle
Via Rampa Castello, Gallipoli, Lecce 73014 - Italy

Map

This Angevin-built Gallipoli Castle can be found to the east of Gallipoli. It is completely surrounded by the sea and dates back to the 13th-14th centuries but was enlarged by the Byzantines and Normans. This fortress was once completely detached from the surrounding territory; with sea lapping against its walls, the entrance faced the island and was connected with the mainland by a drawbridge. The castle can be seen at the start of the peninsular that encloses the old town, at the entrance of the 17th Century bridge.
