The museum gets its name from the white stone used to build the 16th Century Grimaldi family palace. Re-opened in 2004, it holds a notable collection of fine art. Arranged by period and school of painting, the collection includes works by Flemish and Dutch masters, including, Rubens and Van Dyck, and Italian artists, Veronese, Filippino Lippi, Guido Reni, Caravaggio and Procaccini. Spanish artists are represented, as are Genovese painters from the 16th and 17th Centuries. The museum houses an altar piece – made in Canstantinople in 1261 – which is particularly fine with coloured, golden and silver embroidery on purple silk.
