The Delizia Estense del Verginese is a picturesque Estense turreted villa that looks a bit like a miniature castle. It was built on the banks of the River Sandolo which is a medieval branch of the River Po, for Alfonso I sometime in the 16th Century. This was a favourite home of the Duke’s last companion, Laurie Dianti. The architect Girolamo da Carpi converted the old existing farmhouse making it look castle-like with four, square, embrasure towers. Next to the villa is a small 18th Century church, joined by a portico.
