The Delizia del Belriguardo was constructed in 1435 and was the first to be built outside the walls of Ferrara. It was one of the largest and most sumptuous stately homes of the Renaissance period, dubbed ;The Versailles of the Estensi’. It was built by the marquis Niccolò III and later extended by Duke Borso, who wanted it to have one room for every day of the year. It had two loggias and stables that could hold up to 200 horses; it was surrounded by vast gardens with ponds, fountains, embrasure walls with painted towers and a moat.
