Originally built in the 6th Century and dedicated to S. Ambrogio by a group of Milanese refuges who came to Genoa to escape the Longobard invasion. The present building was built with the help of the Jesuit priest Marcello Pallavicino some time between 1589 and 1637; thanks to his prosperous family background, the main altar was dedicated to him. Being modelled on the Compagnia di Christo it is lavishly adorned with pillars, shrines, pulpit, and floors all made of marble. Some valuable works of art have survived such as ‘l’Assunzione’ by G. Reni, ‘la Circoncisione’ and ‘S.Ignazio guarisce un’ossessa’ by P.P. Rubens.
