The church of S.Pietro in Banchi is near the ruined city gate, which shares its name, and the site of the old grain market. It was formerly the main entrance to the city in the 9th Century. An interesting thing about this church is that it was built on a terrace above a row of shops. It was the expensive rents that helped pay for cost of building of the church and to the design of B.Cantone, G. Ponzello and il Vannone. The church also was given the name ‘S.Maria Immacolata’, thanking the Madonna for the end of a plague.
