It is uncertain when the church of Saint Stefano was built, but official sources believe it was sometime between 1054 and 1135. It is one of the most important Romanic examples of architecture in Genoa. It has an interesting dome made of bricks and a bell tower said by some to have been used as a guard post long before the church was built. It was in 1497 that Wool Merchants annexed the chapel dedicated to San Michele after a commission.
