The Doria family is thought to have built the majestic church of San Matteo. Martino Doria commissioned it in 1125 and it wasn’t until after 1310 that the square cloister was added. The exterior is of black and white marble and dates to the 13th Century. It was Andrea, another member of the Doria family, who rebuilt the church in the 16th Century. Inside you can find the transom-window depicting in mosaic San Matteo. Near to the window is a Roman sarcophagus believed to be a trophy of the Battle of Curzola and Andrea Doria’s tomb is in the crypt.
