The Church of Gesu’ was erected in 1570 for the Jesuits to the design of architect Alberto Schiatti. The lack of any wall paintings in the interior is due to a severe fire. The wall on the left has a work of art called ‘Mourning over Christ’, a 15th Century masterpiece by Guido Mazzoni. There is a monumental Mausoleum to Barbara of Austria the second wife of Alfonso II d’Este that was created by Francesco Casella at the end of the 1500s. The bust of the duchess is said to be very realistic.
