The Chiostro dello Scalzo has a cloister called ‘Scalzo’ or ‘Barefoot’. This is because of the usual custom of carrying the cross in bare feet in all processions, which are always observed by the Disciples of Saint Giovanni Battista. The frescoes were painted around 1507-1526 by the artist Andrea del Sarto with stories depicting the daily life of Saint Giovanni Battista who was the protector of the company. However Andrea del Sarto did not complete all the frescoes - Franciabigio taking over during his absence between 1518 and 1519.
