These caves were called the ‘Grotte dell’Abbadessa’ (Caves of the Mother Superior) in the 12th Century. They are divided into various sections; the ‘Camera del laghetto’ (Chamber of the Lake) is classed as wonderful geological architecture. It is circular and around 8 metres high with stalactites hanging from the domed ceiling and forming 5 perfect columns in the centre. A passageway leads to the ‘Camera delle Colonne a Terra’ (Chamber of the Grounded Columns), where you can see a stalagmite shaped like a lion.
