The castle was built for a Scot, E Mackenzie, between 1896 and 1904 by the Florentine architect G Coppode. The mixtures of styles, from medieval to art nouveau, blend together in this marvellous building, with its towers and drawbridges, and inside are paintings, mosaics and fine wrought iron work. The castle passed into the possession of Michael Wolfson Jr, who made it the headquarters of the Wolfsonian Foundation, a vast collection of over 7000 works of art dating from 1885 till 1945. Visits to the castle are by appointment only.
